 About Passports |

A passport is issued by a national government, to identify the bearer as a citizen of the issuing country.
Applicants for Diversity Visas are chosen by a computer-generated random drawing. Your country of birth may qualify you for the next scheduled program referred to as DV2010. The selected applicants will receive permanent resident visas after filing a successful immigration petition. This will give them the legal right to live, work and/or study in the United Sates of America! You and your family may be among those recipients.

If you're a UK citizen, then you'll need a passport, since the UK government doesn't issue ID cards (yet).
Most other countries issue ID cards though, so you can travel anywhere in the EU, the EEA and Switzerland with just that.
